Tis the Season!!!
Have you been hearing something go bump in the night? Feel like something is there that doesn’t belong? Seeing inexplicable things where they don’t belong?! Your house might be infested!
“Infested?” you ask. Yes, you may be experiencing a common phenomenon for this time of year. A rodent infestation.
Generally speaking, rodent season begins when the weather starts to cool. This can be anywhere from August to late October in the United States. Once it cools off hoards of vermin will begin their search for warmer spaces where they can settle in for winter.
Rodents are small creatures, and thanks to their flexible backbone, they can squeeze in, and under, small spaces with ease. Mice can fit through holes as small as a dime, rats can squeeze through holes the size of a quarter, which provides for plenty of entry points to your home. Because all rodents are searching for the basics (water, food, and shelter), here are the 6 most common areas you’ll likely notice them: Kitchens, Bathrooms, Attics, Exteriors, Garages, and Crawlspaces.
Aside from rodents being creepy, what’s so bad about having them around?

Capable of transmitting more than 35 diseases to humans and chewing through materials such as wood and even cement, mice and rats are considered some of the most dangerous public health pests in America. They use materials such as shredded paper, fabric, or dried plant matter to make their nests; and will chew through walls and wires to get around unseen.
So how do I know if I have rodent problem?
Next check for gnaw marks in the most common areas mentioned before. In contrast to the droppings, newer gnaw marks will be lighter in color and become darker as they age. They will often be found on food packaging or the structure of the house itself.

If an infestation is large, you may also detect an ongoing stale ammonia smell coming from hidden areas. If rodents are currently active in or around your home, their runways and tracks are likely to be distinctive, becoming fainter as time passes. Look for smudge marks, footprints, urine stains, or droppings in heavily trafficked areas. You also may hear them scurrying along beneath the floors, scurrying around the cabinets, burrowing behind walls and joists, or making squeaking noises.
